The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time at The National was an excellent night out. I’d recommend you try to catch it while it’s at the West End.
If you haven’t read the book (by Mark Haddon) I’ll give you a brief overview – an autistic boy finds a murdered dog in the middle of the night and, after being wrongfully accused of the murder, takes it upon himself to find out who did it. In a poignant and humorous chain of events he uncovers a lot about himself, his community, relationships and learns the hard way about how to be comfortable in his own skin.
If you have read the book you will be blown away by how the theatre company interpret this to the stage. Without giving too much away, the use of a matrix like floor and set design transports us instantly to the inner workings of the boy’s brain. The intelligent use of technology was both ingenious but not overworked.
It’s already the winner of 5 Tony Awards including Best director, and best scenic and lighting design and has been nominated for an Olivier Award.
Perfect for a date night with a blast of originality.
