Beyond a moat and wrought iron gates, Château Haut Gléon rises from a scented landscape of lavender, thyme, rosemary and grapevines in the heart of Corbières’ Vallée du Paradis.
Over the centuries, Haut Gléon’s wines have earned a reputation for being among the area’s most iconic, and today the estate is cared for by Foncalieu, a Union of Cooperatives tending over 5,000 hectares of vines in France’s “Grand Sud” – the Languedoc, Gascony, Rhône and Provence. Combined with a northerly outlook, clear springs, and a clay and limestone-rich mosaic of terroir, Haut-Gléon gives rise to notably fresh wines, bottled in signature, stout bottles.
Offering guests a haven from which to explore a tapestry of vineyards, Foncalieu restored a range of characterful, air-conditioned bedrooms within the existing house, which dates to 1223. These include luxurious suites in the grand, sturdy château which are particularly popular with honeymooners, family and pet friendly self-catering cottages in the grounds, and a private villa with its own pool.
Guests may also reach the beach in moments, seek out picturesque remnants of Cathar castles, or visit Narbonne’s famously unfinished cathedral before returning to enjoy jazz and a glass of Haut Gléon’s deeply-coloured rosé on the palm-fringed lawn.
